Airport Madness

by Cait on July 30, 2009

Oooooh boy! WHAT. A. NIGHT!

Things were all kinds of crazy at the airport yesterday! There were millions of delays due to the bad weather in the Northeast and flights were just continually pushed back and cancelled. Planes were boarding, de-planing, re-boarding, changing gates! It was NUTS!

Needless to say, we ended up getting home after an 8 hour hiatus in the airport :-/

Sometimes I LOVE traveling and other times (like today) I just can’t imagine having a job where I would have to be on the road constantly. I’m way too much of a Type A to have such unpredictability!!

Aaaanyway – here’s a recap of the eats that got me through it all:

I got a Strawberry FruitKula from Seattle’s Best -

But it was disgusting and completely artificial tasting (stupid me thought it would be made with real strawberries!) so I chucked it after a few sips.

After my smoothie failure I dug into some of my farmer’s market goods – sliced raw almonds, dried apricots and dried apples

A Brent & Sam’s Triple Chocolate Bliss cookie -

And after finishing off my gala apple that I had packed I finally decided to get some dinner.

I decided on a Close Talker salad from Moe’s Southwestern Grill -

I was actually a little excited that we were stuck there through dinner time because I REALLY wanted to try Moe’s while in Atlanta!

The salad consisted of lettuce, cucumbers, pico de gallo, choice of beans, choice of meat and cheese). I chose grilled chicken, black beans and no cheese :)

It was pretty good – nothing special but I’m glad I tried it!

On the side I got chips + guac :-P

On the plane I dipped into Mike’s Chocolate Turtle Chex Mix and a little more of my farmer’s market goods.

It was a LOOOOOOONG night but I’m glad to be back safe and sound because that’s what’s most important!

Question of the Day:

What’s the WORST traveling experience you’ve ever had??

I just had a HORRIBLE flight experience. I was on my way from Logan (boston) to LA. We HAD a direct flight. It was delayed because they needed to fix the plane and had to wait for a part to come in (that should have been an indicator to run away). Finally, we got on the plane 7 hours later (we had been up since 5 AM and took off at 1:30 PM). We get up in the air and 20 minutes later the pilot tells us that the plane wasn’t fixed and we have to make an emergency landing BACK IN BOSTON. It was the worst and scariest landing ever. TO make the rest of the story short, we eventually ended up in LA after more than 24 hours of being awake. YUCK!

Jess – I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you that everything goes smoothly! Nothing is worse than sitting in an airport!

Aw–I am so sorry! Traveling can be glamorous but it can always be so FRUSTRATING. haha

My worst experience was when I was 16 years old and my uncle, who is a pilot, took me to Hawaii for my birthday present. Hawaii was FAB–but since he is a pilot and gets it basically free to fly–there is a chance we will not get a flight. We got to Hawaii okay–but on the way back were stuck in Seattle for 2 whole days….in the airport…sheeesh

A few years ago my ex and I took a “red sox road trip” to Baltimore. On the way home there happened to be a Patriots game on that my ex just had to watch. When we got to the airport we hunkered down in a bar to watch the game…meanwhile our plane is about to take off. I kept watching the clock, but NOOOO, he just HAD to watch the game and couldn’t move. So I got out to the gate to see…NO PLANE! I asked the ladies at the desk where the plane was and they said it took off…she asked me if I was Julie and I said yes. She told me she had been paging William and Julie to the gate and they held the plane up for us, but because dear ol’ William was watching the game we missed out flight. Long story short, I shit my pants, got the ex, and we had to book another flight to Charlotte, and connect there to a flight back to Boston. Oh, we actually didn’t even fly out of Boston, we flew from a smaller air port in RI. So we got to RI pretty late therefore, no one would/could come get us. We had to stay at a hotel airport for the night and wait for my mother to come get us in the morning. It was no fun.
This was my first trip on a plane, out first trip together, and this is what happened!! Can you say “hugh red flag???” lol.
I’m actually still friends with the guy and we laugh about it :)

Ah! I travel for work to our offices in RI, NYC, Atlanta (I have never had an ontime flight here!!!) and Florida. Absolutely Worst experience was a couple of years ago. I was visiting our Florida office for the week. My flight was later that day (Thurs) so I was going to the office for a couple of hours. Then I heard on the news of the big “liquid scare”! All flights were cancelled until further notice and there would be NO liquids allowed on the plane. Oh great, i thought! My colleauge dropped me at the airport where I stayed for the next SEVERAL hours with airport food and yes a glas of wine or two. We finally did get out and once back in the air over Boston we had to circle for about 40 minutes. Yuk! At this point I was tired and sick to my stomach. I felt like crying, seriously! Finally we landed. I looked like a train wreck. As I walked to ground transport I looked at a woman on my flight who looked as fresh as can be. We defintely looked like a before and after pic! I still have nightmares of that trip! But of course I was back at our corporate office here in Boston by 7:30 the next morning (don’t ask me how!). Oh, yes…Business travel is so much fun.

Traci – HAHA! That whole story cracked me up! I love the “before and after pic” mention. CLASSIC! I would definitely be the “after” picture as well! I’m NOT a glamourous traveler! And I definitely don’t blame you for the glasses of wine!! :)

But yes – Atlanta airport is INSANE!!! I can’t imagine working there!!

I got stranded at the Kansas City airport when I flew up to find an apartment in Topeka. I had reserved a car and when I got there there weren’t any to be had. I was stuck in a strange city with no transportation and was 90 min away from any family. It all got resolved and I found an apartment for us but for a couple of hours I was in near tears.

Johanna – I don’t blame you for being near tears! That sounds terrible!! Glad it all worked out though :)
