The 40-Day Fast

by Cait on February 27, 2012

The rest of this day went just swimmingly!

My waffle stack held me over really well (as always) throughout the morning and it was well after noon time before I realized that I still hadn’t felt hunger pangs!

When I finally did, I dug into a delicious veggie burger salad:

You guys may be seeing a lot of these over the next 40 days!

While many of you have “Lent” – I have what’s called “the 40-day Fast.” It’s similar to Lent, but in my religion (Greek Orthodoxy) we don’t get to choose what we give up. For us, it’s no meat, no dairy beginning 40 days prior to Easter (which would be today).

Our Easter also often falls on a different day than Catholic/Christian Easter. This year we’re just the weekend after but some years it’s much earlier or much later – and every once in a while, it even falls on the same day.

I’m going to try to be as creative as possible with meals but if I get a bit redundant, I apologize in advance!

That said, while I had a brown rice veggie sushi roll for dinner tonight, I said farewell to dairy last night with pizza night!

Pizza and burgers are usually the two foods I find I miss the most when I do this fast so I made sure to gobble up both this weekend!

I also wanted to share this meal with you guys though because I LOVED it! I’m not usually a frozen pizza person. I much prefer to make my own. But because time has been limited for me lately, it’s nice to find some good frozen options.

So next time you want a quick and easy pizza – I highly recommend Amy’s 3 Cheese with a Cornmeal Crust!

Amy’s makes some rather tasty pizzas…I’m usually not one for boxed pizza either but I always make an exception for Amy’s.

Agreed! I’m her newest convert! :)

That pizza looks yummy! I’ve had Amy’s roasted veggie pizza before and it’s wonderful as well.

I do Lent but the Catholic version, and only fast on Ash Wednesday and then no meat on Fridays til Easter. Do you know what makes the Greek Orthodox Lent and Easter dates different than the Catholic version?

I actually don’t know. I’ve heard that it’s because we follow the Greek calendar but I’m really not sure – it’s something I’ve actually always been curious about myself and I should probably figure it out!

Salad + pizza is one of my favorite meals so I could continue the 40-day fast for the rest of the year with that on my menu, hehe.

Cait February 28, 2012

Haha – I could too! Unfortunately this was my “last meal” before the fast started!

I almost picked up some Amy’s pizzas on sale today and didn’t. I may have to go back now…

I definitely recommend it! I was really happy with this one!

I had a veggie burger salad for lunch today, too…imagine that! Also, that pizza looks delicious and a great way to get that cheese in before your fast. I can’t wait to see all the creative things you come up with over the next 40 days!

I love that! And frankly I’m COMPLETELY shocked that we would ever end up eating the same thing ;)

No meat + no dairy is my everyday! I should try one of your veggie burger salads one of these days…they always look so good!

They ARE good! I definitely recommend it! And I’m headed to your blog right now for some more meal ideas! :)

Emily @LivingLongfellow February 27, 2012

Gosh, that would be HARD to give those things up. I never knew that was part of the belief for Greek Orthodoxes.

Reply

Cait February 28, 2012

Yeah! A lot of people don’t know about it actually – it used to be harder when I was littler – now I just find it a fun way to be creative in the kitchen! :)

I love making my own pizza too, but sometimes, frozen is necessary. Frozen pizza options are pretty limited in our grocery stores and I have not seen this kind. The best one we have gotten so far is the Frescetta… I don’t even know if I spelled it right.

Cait February 28, 2012

I think you did! I’ve had that kind before too and liked it! It’s a bummer your grocery store doesn’t carry Amy’s or Kashi – those are two of my favorites! Maybe you can put in a request??

That’s a frozen pizza!? Looks amazing!! I’d have a lot harder time living without dairy than meat!

Reply

Cait February 28, 2012

Agreed! I miss dairy MUCH more! And yeah! This pizza was really really good for a frozen pizza. I was super impressed!

How interesting that you have a different version of “lent”. I’ve never known any of the Greek Orthodoxy traditions. It sounds like a great plan!
I agree that Amy’s Frozen Pizzas are surprisingly good! I usually don’t enjoy any of them, but her vegan pizza (made with Daiya) is delicious!

Oooh that will come in handy for me! I will definitely check it out!

I really like Amy’s products but have never tried the frozen pizzas. that seems like a great solution for lazy weeknights when the work day is absolutely too long and cooking does not sound appealing at all!
that is really interesting about the greek religion; something i did not know.
I think i might die without yogurt…ok maybe not, but it would sure make breakfasts boring for me!

Reply

Cait February 28, 2012

Haha I thought the same exact thing – that’s why I was so happy when I tried to soy yogurt and it wasn’t half bad! It’s definitely not as good as the Greek, but it will be a nice sub for the next 40 days :)

Good luck with your fast! It’s very refreshing to see someone actually give things up because of their religion. I didn’t even realize that Greek Orthodox Easter is different!

Reply

Cait February 28, 2012

Yeah! Most people when I tell them are unaware of it actually – technically you’re not supposed to make it known, you’re supposed to just quietly do it – but having a food blog makes that a little hard but I think it’s fun to learn about other people’s religions!

Amy’s pizzas are amazing! I think she makes a cheeseless roasted veggie one if you can find that to enjoy these next 40 days! Good luck Cait!

Cornmeal crust sounds awesome! I’ve had a big craving for corn bread lately, not sure why, but need to fill it soon!

Reply

Cait February 28, 2012

You can’t beat good corn bread – that’s for sure! And definitely give this pizza a try – the cornmeal crust was AMAZING!

At first I cringed because I hate it when people do “detoxes” or dietary eliminations (sigh). But, then I noticed this is something you do every year for your religion (though I don’t get how religions , like with Lent, …how some people take the principle and apply it to food…like giving up a “food” for Lent…I always thought it should be something related to a core value, i.e. giving up negativity or giving up grudges or giving up being worried or something).

Anyway, I would eat 2 or 3 of those pizzaas in one sitting (please say you ate it all :)

I have no willpower, I know I use way too much dairy and meat (and bread, oh boy) as it is, but I’m too stubborn to cut things out.

(p.s. what are your snack choices if you make them? what would you select for midmorning , afternoon and evening if you snacked?).

Reply

Cait February 29, 2012

Haha – I agree. I tend to think of dietary fasts and detoxes as a bit extreme…but I guess it works for some people!

I definitely ate this whole pizza (though I was pretty stuffed after doing so!) – but I don’t always do that…depends on how hungry I am at the time!

When I snack I try to choose a complex carb + protein when I can. My favorites are: apple/pears/baby carrots + peanut butter, a granola bar with milk, pretzels with nutella and peanut butter, trail mix and cereal with milk :)
