A Natural Beauty?

by Cait on February 29, 2012

And the ingenuity in the kitchen continues!

I was REALLY craving one of my waffle stacks this morning – but I was out of soy yogurt and it’s thin consistency lead me to believe that it wouldn’t probably work out too well.

A reader told me that they make coconut milk GREEK yogurt (thanks Diana!) – so until I find that, I might stay away from my waffle stacks for now.

In the meantime – check out Lauren’s awesome stack here!

I love peanut butter and jelly – but something about that sandwich in particular NEVER keeps me full. I have no idea what it is – the peanut butter SHOULD technically stick to my ribs and keep me full for hours…but for whatever reason, it never works out that way. Kinda like Katie with oatmeal…I guess people’s bodies just have different ways of processing certain foods.

That said, I love the taste of pb&j’s FAR too much to give up that easily…so this morning I created a new twist on the classic that will (hopefully) keep me going for a while!

I swapped out the bread for some Van’s 8 Whole Grains Berry flavored waffles, the peanut butter for my beloved Sunflower Seed Butter and the jelly for some freshly sliced strawberries:

The verdict?

So far so good! I LOVED the way this tasted (particularly the contrast of the toasted waffles, melted sunbutter and cool strawberries) and it’s 10am so I’m going 3 hours strong so far!

Coffee was of course consumed on the side.

Now for a little midweek fun…

I came across this article yesterday (I think originally discovered on Pinterest) and thought it had some pretty creative ideas!

Every girl wants to be pretty, but it can be difficult using tons of masks, lotions and just a load of products. It can break your bank and expose you to unnecessary amounts of chemicals. I believe in keeping it simple and cheap. No need to go shopping at Macy’s, Bare Minerals or any of other stores. Just head to the grocery store with a $20 bill to get the same effect. I’ve compiled a few beauty recipes below, but there are a plethora more that are just a search engine click away.
1.) Brown Sugar and Honey Facial Scrub
This is probably my favorite one. Brown sugar exfoliates the skin ridding the pores of all dirt, oil and dead skin cells causing blemishes. Honey is naturally antibacterial, so as the brown sugar scrubs away the things clogging pores, the honey cleans out the sources of the buildup to prevent future breakouts.

2.) Coffee Grounds in Conditioner
This one is really simple. Instead of throwing old coffee grounds away, toss them into your conditioner to make your hair extra shiny. That’s all it takes!

3.) Replace Conditioner with Vinegar
To get rid of the usual problems with hair: build up, dullness and just lackluster, replace your conditioner with vinegar 1-4 times a month, depending on your hair type. Just use it as you need it. And, don’t worry about buying the best stuff for the best results, common white vinegar will do the trick as well as any other vinegar.

4.) Olive Oil as Hair Moisturizer
It’s easy to see how oil can moisturize your hair. It’s simple to use as well. Simply cover your hair in olive oil and leave it in for 30-45 minutes. You can also wrap it in plastic wrap to keep it from dripping. Some also believe it enhances the effect.

5.) Lemon and Egg Facial
Have red splotchiness on your face? Soothe both symptoms away easily by mixing together one egg yolk and the juice of one lemon into a paste. Cover your face with it and leave it on overnight. If this seems like too much work, leave it on your face for an hour. You might not get the optimal results with this amount of time, but you will see a difference.

For the rest of the 15 tips…go here!

Pretty cool no?  There are definitely a few from the whole list of 15 that I think I want to try!  I guess it means I’m a food lover through and through if I’m willing to put it in my hair, rub it on my face and use it as lotion

Do you guys ever try DIY beauty things at home or do you mostly let the professionals do the work for you?

hmmm, the honey and brown sugar one intrigues me, but for more than a body scrub!

Hi, girl! Speaking of beauty junk, I actually recently started using the low sulfate or sulfate free shampoos and it is absolutely amazing what a difference they make–although it probably affects different hair types differently. I used to have greasy hair by the end of every day, but with the lower sulfate I wake up with actually wearable ‘second day hair’ which has never happened for me before. Also I am talking like, Suave for Kids, nothing fancy.

I tried the coconut Greek yogurt… it’s not bad for a yogurt, but definitely not a Greek yogurt.

Somewhere on Pinterest I heard about mixing baking soap with water for a gentle way to exfoliate. It make your face super smooth!

Oooh I like that idea! Pinterest has so many great uses right!? And bummer about the coconut greek yogurt – I was counting on it being close to Greek!

Nothing seems to be keeping me full currently… impressed you got three hours out of waffles! That would have held me about 30 minutes ;)

But love those natural beauty care ideas! Going to try them out!

Peanut butter and fresh strawberries are one of my most favorite sandwich combinations. Peanut butter on a waffle sounds really good! I like the brown sugar honey beauty tip. My mom got tired of looking at my blackheads one day and decided I needed a sugar scrub. She used white sugar and something I cannot remember. She also used to split an aloe vera and rub it on my scalp for thick hair.

Your posts make me so happy! I do the same with waffles and nutbutter- sooooooooooooooo good! AND I totally agree- different people’s bodies process foods differently. PB doesn’t hold me over either.

Your waffle stacks look so delicious!! I’m going to have to try and recreate them! :)

Here’s the link to the coconut greek yogurt:

They have a variety of different flavors (chocolate, blueberry, raspberry, strawberry, plain and vanilla) and I’ve seen it sold at Whole foods.

What a great article! Thanks for sharing. Hope you have a great wednesday :)

DIY beauty + Me = not a good idea! I would certainly screw something up and end up with discolored skin or hair, so I usually stick with the professionals in that category, but I admire all of the great ideas! :)

Hahah I tend to think the same thing about myself, but some of these actually seem kinda easy! I might give one or two a go but if they’re a disaster I’m going right back to my old standbys :)

Mmm, pb sandwich for breakfast! Made even better by the fact that it’s between two waffles. Heck yes.

I have an entire BOOK with DIY beauty treatments and I’ve never even opened it. Gasp! It was a gift, and I think it’s such a good idea, but I’m sort of lazy. Okay, really lazy.

Hahaha – ME TOO! That’s always what deters me. But I love the idea of these anyway!

I LOVE this idea – so healthy and I have some GF waffles that would be perfect for it! I haven’t been in the mood for them lately because they’re seemed so ho-hum, but this will spice them up perfectly!

I love subbing waffles for bread. I’m not a huge fan of the flavor of some gluten-free breatd but I love my gluten free wafffles so I swap them all the time. My favoirte is open faced peanut butter and banana sandwiches!

Mmm that sounds so good! I’m not a huge banana fan (I’m trying really hard to like them though) but I always wish I were for that sandwich idea alone!

Just had to tell you that you have inspired me to purchase waffles after seeing the gorgeous creations that you make all the time!! I purchased a brand called vans and they haven’t disappointed. On the DIY note, I made a face mask over Christmas with Greek yogurt, boiled cranberries and honey to moisturize. It was amazing- let me know if you want the recipe!

Reply

Cait March 1, 2012

Ah I love that! And yes, Van’s are SO good! Definitely one of my favorites – glad you’re enjoying them as well :)

And oooh! I’d LOVE the recipe for that!!
