Nutella-Stuffed Challah French Toast

The key to good french toast is day-old challah.

Sometimes more than a day old.

In fact, the more stale the bread, the better it will hold up as french toast.

I mean, don’t get me wrong – you don’t want it so stale that it’s crumbling in your hands…but it should be a little less than springy to the touch when you go to make the french toast.

And then, if you really want to get crazy, split each slice open and lather it with nutella…

Just try and tell me breakfast gets better than this.  I’m pretty sure you won’t be able to say it with a straight face.

And if you do, I may or may not blow on you to make you blink.  Because the truth is, breakfast doesn’t get better than this (until the next thing I make that I think is delicious.  but shh – no one needs to know that right now).

Okay sorry, back to the point.

Once you’ve assembled your “sandwich” then it’s time to create the egg mixture…

All you need is eggs, milk (or heavy cream if you’re really feeling decadent), vanilla and cinnamon.

Generously dip the entire “sandwich” into the egg mixture making sure to allow each side to soak for at least one minute.

Transfer the egg soaked sandwich to a greased pan over medium-high heat (be careful not to turn the heat up too high or the french toast will burn).

Cook 3-5 minutes each side (or until lightly browned)…and viola!

Top with powdered sugar…

Nutella-Stuffed French Toast {for two}

Ingredients:

  • 1 day-old loaf of challah bread
  • 2 eggs (1 per person, so if you’re making this for two, 2 eggs will suffice.  4 for four people, etc.)
  • 1/2 tsp. vanilla
  • 1/4 cup milk (or heavy cream)
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 4 tbsp. Nutella (or chocolate hazelnut spread of choice)
  • Powdered sugar (optional)
  • Maple syrup (optional)

Directions:

  1. Slice challah bread into 2 inch slices, then slice each 2-inch slice in half
  2. Spread one side of the halved bread slice with 2 tbsp. nutella and top with other half, set aside
  3. In a large pan or bowl, mix together eggs, vanilla, milk and cinnamon, stirring to combine
  4. Drop the sandwich into the egg mixture allowing each side to soak in the mixture for at least one minute
  5. Place the egg soaked sandwich on a greased pan over medium heat, cooking about 3-5 minutes each side or until lightly browned
  6. Allow sandwich to cool 5 minutes then top with powdered sugar and maple syrup.

Wow! I want these… But there’s no challah bread around, so I will have to settle for something else. I would totally make this for dessert, with strawberries on the side. Or a scoop of ice cream.

Gorgeous! Nutella is such a classic. I’d maybe add some thin-sliced bananas. feel like there are endless combinations your could do here… like the Trader Joe’s Cookie butter in the middle drizzled with melted dark chocolate… or mascarpone and strawberries in the middle… MMM
