Race to the Cake

If you follow me on Instagram you know that I had a less-than-exhilarating afternoon.

I snacked on an apple + almond butter (my drug snack of choice lately) while I studied and when Chad got home I dropped my books and we headed out for a run together.

It was hot and sweaty – but that’s the mark of a good run, right?!

Chad went a little longer than I did so I waited for him to get home and then we showered and were back out the door!

“Free” and “Cupcakes”?

As I mentioned on Monday, a new “cupcakery,” SMALLCAKES, opened up right down the road from us (dangerous!) and they sent all the nearby residents a coupon for a free cupcake.

They have a MASSIVE amount of flavors including (but certainly not limited to) stuffed french toast, red velvet, cookies n cream and hot fudge sundae!

Ultimately though, the peanut butter cup called out to us so that’s what we went with!

Based on the smell alone, it was a goooooood choice!

BUT, before we could dig in, we had to eat some dinner.

I know.


But if I ate this cupcake before dinner, that picture up there?  That would’ve ended up being my dinner.

So we put the cupcake back inside it’s home…

Then whipped up a quick and easy dinner (the quicker the dinner, the sooner the cupcake!)

Chicken sausage on whole wheat buns with Trader Joe’s Potato Fries and roasted broccoli…for one of us anyway

If you’ve never tried chicken sausage in place of a hot dog…you must.  It’s one of my favorite ways to eat them I think!

I loaded mine up with some ketchup and mustard.

And enjoyed it with my french fries…

This dinner, as simple as it was, was really good!

So good, in fact, that I considered forgoing the cupcake and saving it for another day.

Until Chad ate the last of his french fries and said “Is it cupcake time now!?”

It was eat or have it be eaten, so I ponied up and got out the dessert plates.

We split it up – 2/3rds for him and 1/3rd for me and enjoyed it with a small scoop of slow-churned vanilla ice cream.

A nice end to the day!

Haha, Chad’s plate looks so similar to Toly’s. I always say Toly’s plates are so beige which is why they never usually make the blog. :)

Haha – yup exactly. It’s funny every once in a while when I stop and actually notice the contrast especially because it makes me realize that that’s the way a lot of other people eat!

I love specialty cupcake shops! There are only a handful in the town where I live, but they are so, so good! They always have such interesting flavors, too! Have you ever had a Crumbs cupcake? You must have during your time in NYC! Omg, they’re the best!!!

I sure have! I’ve pretty much eaten my way through every NYC cupcake shop in my 4+ years of living there! Multiple Crumbs and Magnolia locations, Sprinkles, BabyCakes…SO delicious :)

I never thought to use a chicken sausage vs a hot dog. Looks delicious!

It’s the best! Definitely my favorite way to eat a chicken sausage :) And the cupcake was incredible.

It was seriously good. The cake was super moist and the frosting was extra peanut buttery :)

I am kind of obsessed with chicken sausages. We almost always have a pack in the freezer because they absolutely add flavor to all kinds of dishes. The cupcake does look pretty enticing and with a glass of really cold vanilla soy-milk…oh my :-)
